WHAT IS DATA GOVERNANCE?

EXPERTISE • CONSULTING • SERVICES • SOLUTIONS

As the role of data within organizations becomes more prominent, the necessity for data governance has followed closely behind. From increasing efficiency, driving transformation, supporting decisions, and ensuring customer satisfaction, better data means increased business value. Effective data governance ensures the accessibility, usability, reliability, and quality required to support the organization.

An operationalized governance framework deals not just with the data, but with the people and processes responsible for maintaining and using the information. It defines guiding objectives and principles, sets up necessary decision-making bodies, determines inputs and outputs, and identifies roles and responsibilities. At the same time, policies and standards are institutionalized around things like storage, use, access, metadata, master data, and reference data management to name a few.

There are multiple components encompassing a robust data governance program, in addition to several ancillary items such as data privacy and regulatory compliance. The terminology used within frameworks, industries, regulations, and across vendors is inconsistent at best, so we recommend focusing on the component concepts rather than debating the nomenclature. Below are the components.

DATA GOVERNANCE

The global threat environment has intensified resulting in business continuity, disaster recovery, crisis management, and emergency response becoming an area of focus for board of directors, executive leaders, clients, customers, and regulators.  This increased focus has resulted in greater maturity and heightened expectations around response, recovery, and communication capabilities.

Business continuity management identifies these potential threats and impacts to your business, creates the organizational resilience and recovery capabilities for an appropriate level of response, and safeguards the interests of your customers, employees, reputation, and value.   Potential threats include items such as natural disasters, technological failures, data breaches, human error, fire, terrorism, lawsuits, misconduct, acts of violence, labor action, or drop in share price.

There are multiple components encompassing a robust business continuity program, in addition to several ancillary items such as event/incident management, disaster recovery, crisis management, and emergency response. The terminology used within industries, by regulations, and across vendors is inconsistent at best, so we recommend focusing on the components rather than debating the nomenclature.  Below are the components.

CONTROL EVALUATION

This service evaluates the current-state of data governance control effectiveness with the goal of measuring or improving upon the desired result. We offer two forms of this evaluation; an "assessment of controls" through qualitative evaluation or an "audit of controls" through quantitative and statistically relevant sampling.

REGULATORY OR CERTIFICATION

This service provides an assessment focused on specific regulatory requirements such as CMS, FEMA, FFIEC, FINRA, HIPPA, OCC, SEC or certification mechanisms such as ISO 22301. This assessment helps identify non-conformities and is designed for companies needing to undergo an audit or certification process.

GAP ANALYSIS

This service analyzes the current-state of data governance components, alongside required or best practices, to identify gaps and actionable recommendations. We offer two versions of the gap analysis; an accelerated approach for scoping or reporting purposes, and a deep-dive approach for detailed planning on larger initiatives.

MATURITY ASSESSMENT

This service assesses the current-state of the data governance components and processes to determine the degree of maturity. The results of the assessment are mapped to a capability maturity model that also includes the findings, level designation, and road map to deliver upon stakeholder expectations.

ASSESSMENTS AND AUDITS

AUDIT PREPARATION AND RESPONSE

A service to help prepare or respond to a regulatory or third-party audit.  This is not an evaluation of your data governance maturity but rather the coaching of your team for audit preparation or response. This includes general Q&A sessions, role playing sessions, and subject matter advisory.

MANAGED SERVICES

IMPLEMENTATION OUTSOURCING

This service provides an opportunity to outsource the implementation or remediation of data governance.  The team includes the required resources such as strategic advisers (senior practitioners), project oversight resources (program/project management), supporting team members (analysts, subject matter experts) and  third-party vendors.

OPERATIONAL OUTSOURCING

This service provides companies the ability to outsource operational components of data governance with the goal of attaining higher or equal value at a lower overall support cost.   Ancillary benefits include improving the core business focus, freeing up internal resources, and gaining access to world-class resources and capabilities.
